Has anyone in here done anything with seed saving, heirloom / organically certified seeds? Book recommendations? Pointers?

[posted to my personal journal, norcalgardening, gardensnotgas, sq_ft_garden, and sq_ft_gardening. My apologies if you see it five times.]

So far, no garden pics (I haven't been in a picture-taking mood lately), but there's lots of garden joy this week. Last Friday, choirboypuppy came by to help me with some weed removal and planting, and to keep the garden cat company.

So far, the grid isn't nearly full, but it looks like this (tonight I'll plan what to put in the empty spaces):

pending pending 1 tomato (black zebra) 1 tomato (super sweet 100)
pending pending pending 1 sweet basil
pending reserved for slug trap (yeast/sugar mixture) pending pending
1 verbena (still there from last year) 1 strawberry (also from last year) pending pending

My goal is to go over there every day for at least a quick visit, and so far I'm doing well. Today, I laid down copper tape and pulled a few tiny weeds, along with watering the plot. Tomorrow, I plan to water the plot, water the butterfly-attractor plant I bought for the garden fence, put up my twine dividers, place my slug trap, and plant some seeds.

We'll see how it goes.

Square Foot Garden Update [Jun. 4th, 2006|12:19 pm]

You can see my not so effective pesky critter control measures. We have the shoddy fence, the sad little twirly thingies, and the blow-up owl. The bunnies laugh in my general direction.

There on the left front we have the watermelons. They've grown a lot in the past two weeks huh? At the back left to right are cucumbers and okra. A little in front of the okra is the broccoli that won't give up, and kind of near the melons is the eggplant. I wish I had put it on the other side of the square, but oh well.

One cucumber is much larger than the others. I wonder why? It is trying to tear down the fence also. Damn agitator cucumber.

Remember how the squash was teeny on May 14th? Just two little leaves? Well that's it yesterday. Look at all those pods...those will be squash soon. yum!

Little green tomatoes! YAY!

The corn is also getting bigger. I think we could have fit more into that square. Next year that is what we'll do. There is some grass in there because this square is totally Ian's responsibility and he isn't a good weeder.

Everything else looks about the same as it did. Still no berries. I think the lettuce is pooping out, and the carrots are doing good, but there is nothing fun to look at going on there.

Box number one is doing great! I may not get strawberries this year, but I think I'm lucky they're even alive as shitty as they looked when I took them out of that bag when I bought them.

Updates? [May. 13th, 2006|09:05 am]

So how is everyones gardens growing? I've had a *really* hard time with my boxes. I'm not sure what we did wrong, but everything would grow perfectly and then when the leaves got big, it would start to die out. The leaves would turn yellow and then get crispy edges and then the plants would die. Or just sit there. Not growing a bit.

So...I abandoned the Mel's Mix alone. And went to the dark side, adding in some Miracle Grow Potting soil. I did it about a week ago and made the pictures immediately afterward. And things are looking a teeny bit better. (I think, fingers crossed.)

Pic's Right After I Replanted and/or Mixed in the Miracle Grow.Collapse )

Those taters are growing in a big pot. Once they get about 6-8 inches tall I'll put more dirt in there and make them get taller. Eventually we'll dump it out and have lots of little potatoes all in the pot.

This is my herbs that are sprouting. I think I may be overwatering the cilantro.

This is the spinach. It's been planted over a week now and the weather has been *terrible*. Freezing nights and sunless days. It hasn't grown much, but it looks healthy enough I suppose.

These are my 3 beds. One 2' X 6' and two 2' X 8'. The mix used is Mel's Mix. It was quite the expense and trouble, so we'll see how it ends up working out. I'm cautiously hopeful.

Hello all! My name is Gwen and I live in Dallas, TX. I am going to plant my square foot garden tomorrow with the assistance of my wonderful man, Davy. I'm not sure which vegetables I'm going to plant; I'll just take a browse tomorrow at Whole Foods and see which seeds look good.

I first read about square foot gardening in organic gardening magazine last year. they didnt mention the book or raising or separating the beds, so my plan is just to mark out a 4x4 square in my yard with a one foot walking border on all sides. ive never had a garden before, so im very excited, especially at the chance to have several different crops with minimal work. gotta admit, im rather lazy. im just planning on getting a few bags of soil with compost already mixed in.

one question- how often do you guys water?

ill post some photos of my bed tomorrow!

The Square Foot Garden is looking much the same as before, only now it is totally full of dirt. I'm planting stuff next week. Onions, Broccoli, Lettuce, Strawberries, Carrots, and maybe some hardy herbs. I also need to dig up all those Iris bulbs you see sprouting in the background there behind the yellow Daffodils, divide them, and replant them back into that same bed once I put in some edging for it and add more dirt. It is seriously washing away. I want to put some Poppies and maybe some Purple Coneflowers or something in between the irises so that the weeds and grass don't get in there to take over once the Irises quit blooming like they usually do.

Ignore that rotting bale of hay.
I have a plan to build a walkway in between all the boxes too. That will require like 6 bags of cedar walkway mulch, some stepping stones or flat rocks, and the assistance of the fellas who live here.
